Philadelphia–Late October, First of November

Michael and I took a walking tour of Philadelphia via cd one day.  I’m sure we looked like idiots as we crossed the street listening to headphones from the same cd player, looking in awe at each building, then randomly stopping to hear facts given given to us by “Philadelphia Frita.”  The cd tour was cheesy but interesting, and we were able to see many things that we would have otherwise passed by.  For instance this picture was taken outside of one of the free libraries which Benjamin Franklin helped establish (What did he NOT help establish in Philadelphia??!?).  The statue depicts Benjamin Franklin holding the scepter facing down in defiance towards the England monarch.  He’s also wearing a toga-like outfit because he was interested in establishing a new republic like Rome had done previously.  Thanks, Philadelphia Frita!  So much wonderful history that is easily passed by in the hustle and bustle of today’s society.

Another fascinating fact:  On the right is the Benjamin Franklin Post office.  The only post office in America that does not fly the American flag.  The reason for this is because the post office was established prior to the first flag being made.  Upstairs is a very small museum.  One thing I learned from it was that the US (New York City and Philadelphia) tried to create a Pneumatic tube mail system (similar to how you receive money from a drive-thru bank, or prescriptions from a drive-thru pharmacy) to deliver mail in the 1800s!  It was too cost prohibitive, however, and was dissolved.

A favorite thing of mine to do when on vacation is to check out the Foder’s book of that city and go and do what they recommend–usually the ideas are fun, and worthwhile.  The Cosmopolitan Restaurant was such a place.  While admiring the olive/martini light fixtures and the other metro-y decor, we split a yummy sandwich and salad.  What they are especially known for their shoestring fries.  After getting over the dilemma of HOW to eat them, they were delicious!

Below, is not Ben Franklin’s epitaph, but it was one that he wrote as a young man for himself, and it is on a plaque beside his grave.  Michael and I found it interesting.

Too bad that they are restoring William Penn on top of City Hall- ruined the picture .  Fun fact, thanks to the Foder’s Book…until 1987, it was the tallest building in Philadelphia.  Crazy to think about that because now, there so many taller buildings–all within 20 years!  It’s also the largest building of it’s kind in the world: masonry building (no steel).

An Amish father and son working in the field.  I wanted desperately to get a good picture, but don’t want to be one of those gawking tourists (um…too late??)…so this is through the car window…still fun, though.

Self-Timer…gotta love it.  We are all laughing because I couldn’t keep anything in my pocket the entire weekend.  Before the snap, I was being teased about my clutzy ways–I hit the button and ran to get into the picture…took a slight stumble, and my phone flew out of my pocket and into the fire…luckily it was down to embers, and it landed primarily in soot.

Celebrations Abound

We left Friday for Griffin’s Graduation Celebration!  Yeah, Griffin!

We drove back on Saturday night, and I baked most of the evening to prepare for a baby shower on Sunday night–there was very little down time, but my dear husband let me take a nap on Sunday afternoon, while he finished cleaning and decorated for the shower!  You just can’t complain about that type of KINDNESS!

coffee punch shower2

I cropped the pic of the shower because I made the dad-to-be wear a pregnancy belly while the presents were being opened.  I didn’t think he’d appreciate the full profile picture on the WWW. :) One of the ladies that came brought a yummy coffee punch.  Even if you aren’t a coffee drinker, it’s light and nice.  I’ll try to post the recipe.  It was fun and different from the normal shower punch.  Since I was serving men, too, I tried to do foods/drinks, etc. that were more hearty than dainty.  The punch sure hit the spot!

Our last guests left at 10:30 p.m., and we drove up to Indianapolis to spend yesterday with my grandparents–It was such a wonderful time.  I am SO thankful for time I’m able to spend with them (they live in AZ and OK) since they are getting older and their health isn’t what it used to be.

GREAT, but busy weekend.

Just wanted to post about my weekend…I’ll leave you with this thought from my calendar today…

If it’s a penny for your thoughts and you put in your two cents’ worth, someone, somewhere is making a penny. :)

Happy Tuesday!

Sorry about the multiple posts. Yes, I know I have issues.

For Ange

Ange–this is the picture I was talking about.  I can vividly remember being so proud of “matching” pajamas as well as Sterling fitting into the night gown intended for my cabbage patch!  Seeing your little one, brought the memories of this picture back. :) I know, I Know–the gowns themselves aren’t all that lovely, but the memories are irreplacable.  Besides, it was the 80′s, so it’s absolutely permissive that the syle is a bit ‘off’!  Just had to share as I really loved seeing that picture of Ainsley–almost enough to cry. :)

   For Ange

Dear Host, Please Under Promise & Over Deliver.

The weather was too warm to ski this weekend, so we met in Cincinnati at Jungle Jim’s then went to the Cincinnati Art Museum.  We had a great day!  Saturday, we had a college friend come into town.   I called ahead to one of our favorite restaurants in Louisville, Havana Rumba, where we were told we’d have to wait for 30 minutes.  NO PROBLEM… After arriving & waiting 45 minutes, and still not being seated, we asked the host how much longer we’d have to wait.  Apathetically, he replied, “45 more minutes.”  Something is definitely wrong with his math skills!  He needs to learn the motto “Under Promse, Over Deliver!”  We were majorly disappointed–we had an 8 o’clock show to make, so we had to leave and go elsewhere…AND by this time, we were short for time, so we headed to a Jimmy John’s.  I was super disappointed being the one “in charge” of the plans and have to resort to a sandwich shop, but sometimes I have to give up my perfectionistic ways and learn to go with the flow…This was one such instance, and personally, I think better memories are made that way. We went to a comedy show that evening.  Our college friend assured us that the comedian was very clean and appropriate, but I doubtfully thought, “I’ll believe THAT when I see it!”  Surprisingly, he was VERY clean, and we really enjoyed the show–Michael laughed so hard, he got an ab workout!  Last night, we went over to some friends’ house, and had a delightful time!  All in all, great weekend, so I wanted to blog about it.

Reminiscing of days gone by…

(Ange, I was inspired with all your nostalgic photos)…

I Love my family

I’m a big picture girl–love looking at pictures (that’s what drew me into Xangadom, anyway!)–maybe it came from working at a photo lab in high school, I dunno.  Whatever the reason, I LOVE PICTURES.  Recently, I’ve found a few pictures of my family throughout the years. Just thought I’d share with the Xanga world, even though I don’t think anyone browsing here will remember ANY of these stages except the skiing picture from Dec 97.

I am so thankful for my family…

And a favorite poem from around that time period…

Smart, by Shel Silverstein from Where the Sidewalk Ends

My dad gave me one dollar bill

‘Cause I’m his smartest son,

And I swapped it for two shiny quarters

‘Cause two is more than one!

And then I took the quarters

And traded them to Lou

For three dimes—I guess he don’t know

That three is more than two!

Just then, along came old blind Bates

And just ‘cause he can’t see

He gave me four nickels for my three dimes,

And four is more than three!

And I took the nickels to Hiram Coombs

Down at the seed-feed store,

And the fool gave me five pennies for them,

And five is more than four!

And then I went and showed my dad,

And he got red in the cheeks

And closed his eyes and shook his head—

Too proud of me to speak!

***Sigh***  I loved being a kid.   Minus the fact that I no longer ring my neighbor’s doorbell to ask them to play, often times, I still exhibit many characteristics of a kid.  I think, at heart, I’ll always be one.
