Identification of a Garden Pest

August 25, 2010 by Maren 3 Comments

Do you know what kind of garden pest would cause this type of damage to my tomatoes?

Our neighbor came over and brought some veggies: several tomatoes and peppers.  She brought the loot in a Wal-mart bag. I sat the bag on the floor because at nearly the same time, the mail came and I went to grab it.

There were a couple of things of interest in the mail which diverted my attention.  Meanwhile a lot was happening on the home front, to which I was unaware.

Total damage=2 tomatoes + seeds EVERYWHERE + 1 proud boy

(dumb me-I’m not used to using the video feature on my camera–The whole video is sideways.  Sorry. )

Painting Woenails

August 23, 2010 by Maren 3 Comments

A friend complimented my newly painted toenails, which I painted myself.  And if you’ve ever experienced a humungo pregnant belly like mine, you know what a feat painting toenails can be during the time when you’ve got a bowling ball size tumor protruding from your abdomen.

I relayed the compliment to my husband who wondered why painting toenails was a big deal while pregnant.

Without another word, I went to the yard.  Grabbed a soccer ball.  Returned to the house.  Shoved it up his shirt and asked him to touch his toes continuously for the next few minutes.

“Oh.”

Life’s like that…

August 10, 2010 by Maren 7 Comments

I sometimes feel like I’m swimming in a big pond, flailing my arms and only my nose is above the water.  Seriously, sometimes life is like that… and that’s currently how I feel.

This past week I did things I’d never imagined myself doing:  I googled things like, “Why does my dog have an enlarged prostrate?”  I forgot to put a dirty diaper in the pail and came back to one disappeared mess and one happy dog.  I shattered a bowl with my serving of apple pie and ice cream inside.  I went to the doctor and found out that in ONE month, I’ve gained TEN pounds.  That’s a whole baby, folks.  And this momma was NOT happy–I held the floodgate of tears back until my car wouldn’t start after my appointment.  Then I let loose.  Yes, it’s been like that the past few days.

Sure, good things have happened.  My in-laws were in town and helped us A TON with renovations.  My little one loves his grandparents and enjoys having them read to him.

Good things have happened, yes, but sometimes, you just feel an overwhelming sense of all that’s going not-quite-right and you just breath a huge sigh, and then you sigh again…And again.

Yes, life is like that sometimes.

But even amidst the sighs, I remember my MANY blessings and my heart remembers all the people and things that make it truly blessed.

Gourmet Pizza- 5 bucks!

July 22, 2010 by Maren 4 Comments

I always knew my mother was brilliant.  But recently, she came up with an idea of which the world needs to know.

As many of you know, Little Caesar’s has made a comeback since the days of “Pizza Pizza” where the BOGO was a deal heard round the world and fed hungry, large families from sea to shining sea.  These days, their Hot-And-Ready pizzas are a steal at just five bucks.  So…here’s my mom’s idea:  First, you buy a LC’s cheese pizza & bring it home.  Next, add whatever you want (possibilities are endless!  I added fresh basil, feta cheese, and tomatoes except on 2 pieces for Little One).  Stick it back in your oven and bake it until it gets hot again.  Voila!  A gourmet pizza in less than 15 minutes start to finish for $5 AND absolutely NO EFFORT.  And the very BEST aspect?…NO CLEAN UP!  Can’t beat it!  (Pardon the fact that I browned it a little too much… Little boy decided to become needy at the exact moment the pizza was done.)

Now, feel free to agree with me…my mother is a genius.
