All the time

August 15, 2007 by Maren 8 Comments

A few years ago, Michael and I went through the darkest time of our lives.  Without going into detail, it was a time of questions, hurt, & despair, but God was so evident during those times.  I have recently found a notebook that I kept from around that time, and was grateful for some of the comforts that He provided then.  I can remember at the beginning of our struggles, God particularly provided this song—offering so much comfort during that especially bleak time.  What a reminder that although pain comes, GOD IS FAITHFUL.  During that time,  a valuable lesson was instilled within me that was hard for me to grasp until that time (…being the People Pleaser that I am): People will disappoint me, and that’s why my faith has to be in God alone.

1. Be still, my soul; the Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain;
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain.
Be still, my soul; thy best, thy heavenly, Friend
Through thorny ways leads to a joyful end.

2. Be still, my soul; thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past.
Thy hope, thy confidence, let nothing shake;
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.
Be still, my soul; the waves and winds still know
His voice who ruled them while He dwelt below.

3. Be still, my soul, though dearest friends depart
And all is darkened in the vale of tears;
Then shalt thou better know His love, His heart,
Who comes to soothe thy sorrows and thy fears.
Be still, my soul; thy Jesus can repay
From His own fullness all He takes away.

4. Be still, my soul; the hour is hastening on
When we shall be forever with the Lord,
When disappointment, grief, and fear are gone,
Sorrow forgot, love’s purest joys restored.
Be still, my soul; when change and tears are past,
All safe and blessed we shall meet at last.

Singing this song, at the time, made my tears flow endlessly, YET COMFORTED ME.  Looking back, I’m thankful for what happened.  God’s hand was evident even through our struggles and He remained faithful, and always will be so.

Shortly after this, we made a trip to Guatemala.  It was there, that God STRONGLY reminded us of His faithfulness in providing encouragement from the most unlikely place.  We had many Guatemalan pastors and pastors’ wives pray for us and the church that we hoped to plant.  During that trip, I clung to this song which was such a needed blessing at just the perfect time.

You are the rock of my salvation.
You are the strength of my life.
You are my hope and my inspiration.
Lord unto You will I cry.

I believe in you, believe in you.
For your faithful love to me.
You have been my help
in time of need.
Lord, unto you will I cleave.
You are the rock of my salvation.

I’m thankful that my old notebook provided this special reminder today.

All the time, He is GOOD!  Praising Him!

It’s official–I’m crazy.

Michael and his parents, who have been visiting from Ohio, this week have been working on projects around the house during the work days while I’m at work.  Many of these projects have been in the kitchen and  I’m thankful for what has been accomplished.  They are always so kind and helpful–TERRIFIC-EST inlaws EVER, and its fabulous to have them here!

SOOOOOOOO…Last weekend, my sister-in-law made me some cookie dough for the freezer (THANKS SO MUCH, LAURA!), and IT HAS BEEN WONDERFUL being able to pop the dough in the oven to have cookies available for my in-laws throughout the week.  SO VERY NICE!

Last night, I baked about 3 dozen of the cookies, thinking that Michael was having additional guests over.  Today, the cookies were mostly gone when I got home from work, so I went to pop some more in the oven.  Slight problem: My favorite cookie pan was nowhere to be found.  Like previously mentioned, there have been projects going on the kitchen this week, so I figured that someone moved it.  I frantically searched throughout the cupboards in the kitchen, but was unable to find my special tray.  It was nowhere!  I started to presume that my neighbor (the one who knows the color of my kitchen and peeks in my windows) was perhaps envious of my amazing stoneware pan, and had come into our house under the cover of darkness to steal it.  There was no explanation!!!  That is, until I opened the oven door, and sitting in the oven was my cookie pan from last night!  Why is this a big deal, you ask?  There were a dozen cookies still on the tray.  It’s official.  I’m crazy.

Living the Life…On Pennies!

I probably did something today that most people in America wouldn’t consider.

Kroger keeps the most delicious Lemon Pepper Asparagus Salad on its rotation at the deli, and when I’m in the store during my 30 minute lunch, it’s impossible to pass up.  Included in the deliciousness is asparagus, roasted red peppers, olives, feta cheese, lemon pepper vinaigrette, artichoke hearts and pine nuts. Its 100% of pure tastiness.  The total for this scrum-did-le-ump-tious-ness totaled to $2.00.

I quickly scanned the UScan area.  Assessing the current level of busyness, it was there that I did what most Americans wouldn’t dare to do.  Reaching slyly, but laughingly into my purse, I pulled out my Ziploc back of pennies and filled the Uscan with 190 pennies and 1 dime.

About 5 minutes later, and with only one assist from the Uscan clerk, (who had to bang the machine to release my stuck pennies) I left with a smile on my face, the sneer of disgust from a random customer waiting on who knows what (not me!  I made sure I wasn’t holding up the line…), and the best lunch in the world.

My asparagus salad is now eaten, and I can truthfully say, “I paid pennies for it.”

The Garage Sale that lasted forever

July 31, 2007 by Maren 7 Comments

There once was a girl named Maren who lived in a time not so long ago.  She continually accumulated junk in a bin designated for Goodwill, and didn’t have a house big enough to store too much junk.  This had it’s pros and cons.  On most days, it was to her advantage because having a small house caused her to relieve herself of her junk quite regularly.  As a result, she didn’t have too much to put in a yard sale.  Yet, she still thought that it would be beneficial to have one–allowing her and her friends the opportunity to get rid of unneeded stuff.

Ads were placed in the newspaper to entice people from miles around to come to their sale.  Some participants (KW) prepared while others procrastinated (MB).  The Thursday of the sale, six families brought their junk to Maren’s house.  The junk seemed to appear continuously, with no end in sight. AND because Maren had no garage, her entire living room was filled from floor to ceiling with crap-o-la.  The junk made Maren’s house SMELL like a Goodwill, and about sent her to the loony bin! Yet, thanks to the help of her husband, she survived.  She didn’t have much time to look for junk to sell for herself, but as previously mentioned, she was on the verge of a breakdown, and it was probably better that she stopped looking.

The garage sale was set for Friday morning, with hopes that the impending rain would not appear.  As Maren’s husband and helpers set up for the sale, the downpour came, but  lasted only briefly to allow Maren’s husband and helpers the opportunity to continue in the process and prepare for the chaos.  The ads worked, and people from across the world (or so it seemed) came to the garage sale.

There were good things about the sale: A LOT OF JUNK SOLD that day & the comradery was joyous.  As a general rule, however, Maren and her friends found the day too stressful for enjoyment…and this was even taking into account that Maren could only get off of work for the afternoon part of it!  (Hats off to those who stayed the entire day! KW) When Maren arrived home from work to join in the garage-sale-ing, she realized that the neighborhood signs she had made had never been placed–so, she set out to terrorize the neighborhood with bright orange signs to attract even MORE people to the sale.

One of the ladies in their sale had priced most of her stuff exorbitantly high, but how does one rationalize with another that their junk isn’t better than anyone else’s?  One shopper handed the money-taker a dime for a tupperware, only to discover that the high-asking-price lady was asking $10 for it! (I can understand why they lost THAT customer…)  At the end of the day, about 1/2 of the junk had sold, and it was toted back into Maren’s house to await being sold the next day.  Most of the high-priced lady’s items came back in or was stored in her van for the night.  Otherwise, everyone sold quite a bit of their junk—and as a result, that evening, Maren’s home only smelled like HALF of a Goodwill.

Saturday came bright and early, and the madness resumed.  Maren left at 11:00 to prepare for her Ultimate Frisbee games as the sale was continuing in a chaotic kind of way.  ***This was a welcomed break to the madness, even if she had to play the team that made her feel like crying a few times back.  It was nice to expend the garage-sale-stress in an aggressive, physical sports activity.  Maren’s parents & Michael cheered her on to an ‘almost’ victory, and left after her first game…where they came back as the sale was just wrapping up to hit the ground cleaning.***

When Maren arrived back to the house after all 3 of her games, the house was cleaned throughout, the yard had been raked and looked nice again and Maren almost forgot about the madness (THANK YOU Michael, Dad and Mom)  But not before saying, “Never again!”

(Special thanks to Krista who worked so hard throughout the weekend ~  Also, because of her accounting skills, we were 100% accurate in divvying out the $!! BONUS!)
