Where did you go?

November 5, 2008 by Maren 6 Comments

After a week of wonderful fun, a relaxing vacation, and a much needed break, I can attest to the fact that it’s back to the grind here in Louisville.  Vacation, Vacation, where did you go?

Last night, after making one batch of entirely ginarmously FLAT sugar cookies for my lil’ brother’s birthday, I tried a second time.  The second batch was forgotten in the oven and burned.  I decided after two failed batches that I should just skip my attempts to be a loving sister and go to bed.  Though, one thing stood between me and sleep: a pot of beans simmering on the stove.  I added more water to the pot, Michael turned on the timer(so I could wake up & transfer them to the refrigerator), and then I went to bed.  One hour later, we woke to more smoke in the house than one would ever have thought possible.  In addition, lingering with the smoke was the worst possible odor that could ever invade a home.  Through open windows, fans blowing, a trip out to the car to escape from the stench, and using my comforter as my gas mask, I was too quickly reminded…VACATION IS OVER.  Shame.

If only I could bottle up the stench and download it to the blog for you to experience with me (read: pity me.).
To remember the better days of last week, here are some pictures to enjoy…meanwhile, I sit at work in my clothes’ still-smell-like-burnt-bean rankness wondering how long I have to wait for another vacation.  Vacation, come back–PLEASE!

EWWWW d’état

October 22, 2008 by Maren 10 Comments

For a short while in high school (during the Tulsa years), I worked in a drug store photo lab. Occasionally, a phantom homeless lady would pay us a visit.  Maybe I shouldn’t say ‘pay‘ us a visit, because our store never saw a dime of her money.  Her purpose was to shoplift and also to douse (AND I DO MEAN DOUSE, folks) herself in a cheapo fake parfum de stinky.  I haven’t thought of that lady for YEARS until yesterday when I smelled another lady wearing the same perfume at Bible Study.  Yet another association induced by smell.

New Word for your day (a Maren-ism): EWWWW d’état
Definition: a sudden overbearing exercise of perfume in social settings ; especially : the violent attack or overpowering of a helpless individual by a select few who wear perfume that is pungently offensive.

I am all for perfume.  I have a few bottles myself, but please do me a favor and remember the following tips.  #1. Less is more.  If you smell like you’ve just stepped from a flower garden into a vat of aromatherapy, take the clue that you’ve probably put on too much. #2 It’s fine if you appreciate this particular smell…but if you plan to see me, please avoid wearing it during our encounter. Otherwise, I’ll figure you’re stinky and homeless.  And I’ll be forced to excuse myself from your presence…

…but then maybe, you’ll want to wear it???

Got any of your own smell association stories for me?

Columbus Day Meanderings

Last week, Michael and I took a break from the norm & tooled around the great state of Kentucky.  We went over to Midway, KY where there are a bunch of cute little shops.  (Inconveniently, most of them were closed on Monday.  However, we still had a great time.)

We drove by a working mill and bought some flax seed.  (Read: this is what you eat when you become old.)

Coincidentally, this is the same mill that Michael’s grandfather worked at in the 1800’s.

Kidding.  If you believed that one for a second: notice the car to the left.  And Michael in the picture.
We then stopped by and waved to the governor in Frankfort.

Then stopped by my favorite place to grab a drink before heading home.  Any takers as to where we stopped?

Clue #2:

Another fun fact:  Michael hadn’t heard of one of these until we were dating.  Happy guessing 🙂 & Happy Tuesday!

And another favorite:  For any of you Okies who may be reading this, i.e. family & a few high school peeps… Thanks to my informant, Krista, I just found out that they are putting a Bueno in less than 2 miles from my house!!!  We’ve reached cool-ness in Louisville, peeps!  Hoo-rah!  Come up/over/down for a visit!!!!!!!

Newsworthy Material

Sorry for such a serious post today.  My mom sent me this late-breaking news, and I thought it needed to be shared on my blog.  I’ll be back to my normal self by the next blog.

The famous Olympic skier Picabo Street (pronounced Peek-A-Boo) is not just an athlete…. She is now a nurse currently working at the Intensive Care Unit of a large metropolitan hospital. She is not permitted to answer the hospital telephones. It caused too much confusion when she would answer the phone and say, “Picabo, ICU.”

Happy weekend!
