Graciousness for the Clueless

July 10, 2007 by Maren 8 Comments

This weekend, Michael and I headed to a nearby Home Depot for a fabulous experience with a clueless individual.   You see, we’ve got this project on the back burner of our minds, hoping to complete it soon or “get around to it”–You know how these types of projects go– it’s a domino effect of things to do, and frankly can be overwhelming when it comes down to getting the actual task completed.  So, there is a washer smack-dab in my kitchen.  To hide the eyesore, we plan to buy a compact washer and dryer, keep them in the kitchen, but enclose them in cabinets so they look relatively normal and avoid being such an eyesore.  Our first stop on our estimate-making journey was to stop at the counter tops section to get estimates for replacing our kitchen counters (which look like a gigantic cutting board.)  Let’s just say that I  have overly expensive taste, as I love the granite. Now granted, Granite is nice (sorry couldn’t help)…BUT, putting granite in our small home would be a dumb decision because installing them would about double any asking price we’d eventually need to sell our house and break even!  Okay, kidding, but it’s still WAY steep.  After making our way to the counters, we meandered up to the washer and dryer area where we were quickly pounced upon by a eager salesman.  I’d been helped there before, but by another individual.  I told the salesman what I was looking for–and since I’d been here before, I knew they had it available to be ordered.  He got out his little catalog books and started searching.  Soon, he was telling me that what I wanted didn’t exist.  I gently tried telling him that I’d been helped here before, and I know they exist AND in fact, at one time they had a model on display.  But no, of course, I was wrong.  I continued to insist there was a front-loading washer smaller than the one he was showing me, but he said that washers that small are not front-loading.  After a few minutes of getting nowhere, I thanked him for his help, and left (muttering mean things under my breath about salespeople who don’t know what they are talking about).  Returning home, and searching for the item on the Home Depot website, I quickly found exactly what I was looking for. Sigh.

I couldn’t help but stewing about how useless some customer service people are– how they speak like they know everything, when in reality, they don’t know much. But then, the tables turned, and I thought about my job.  I’ve recently received a small promotion, and it requires much more technical knowledge and lingo that I’m still learning-  Realistically, it will take me about a year to feel comfortable in my current position and about the same time to gain the knowledge that I need to handle calls (and not ask for help on every call…).  I probably sound to my callers like the goofy Home Depot man sounded to me.  Definitely something for me to think about and to learn from: I want people to be gracious to me while I’m learning, so I should be the same to the clueless salesman.  But perhaps I can also learn from this experience by realizing, too, that it’s okay not not have all the answers and to humbly admit it when I don’t.

the Bat’s ballgame

Went to an Louisville Bats Game with some friends…

                                    3

                                    2

We had a great time.  Michael and I sang for a $10,000 Oreo Jingle Contest, and received two free t-shirts for participating.  The friends we met at the park came early and got 3 bobble heads.  One of the players on the opposing team threw a ball to us.  And between all of us, we caught 2 more promotional t-shirts!  That’s 8 free things at the ball park!  Score–I never get free things like that!  Maybe we’ll win the contest, too!

That’s all, folks.  Happy Monday.  (why did I feel like the above was a math word problem?!?!?! lol.)

Living in the age of modern conveniences…

Tonight I stopped by Kroger to buy popcorn.  Unlike the majority of Americans, I pop my popcorn on the stove, the good ole’ fashion way.  For some reason, I enjoy it more.  That, and it’s cheaper .  The gal at the check out counter was about 18 and fascinated. Here’s the conversation.

Gal: Cool, Popcorn!?!?

Me: Mmmhhmmm…

Gal:  Do you cook this on your STOVE?

Me: Mmmmhmmm.  You put it in a pan with oil, put the popcorn in the pan, put the lid on, turn it on medium, and it cooks it within a few minutes.

Gal: WOW.

I think by her fascination that she expected me to wear a dress, a bonnet, and ride off in my horse-drawn carriage. 🙂  Life, Gotta love it!

Happy Sunday!

Friends, Games, and MIA Michael

Ever had one of those weeks where you get up on Friday and wonder where the rest of the week has gone?  That’s a great description of my current week.  Here’s the run down.

Monday- Watched two of my favorite kids on earth.

Tuesday- Helped a friend measure/cut/pin beautiful fabric from South Africa to make curtains (yes, Maren was slightly hesitant about gouging a hole or something in the delicate and fabulous fabric.)  Also, played 2 games of Rummikub with the same friend.  Have I ever mentioned how much I love games?  Perfect job title: play games all day (and win).

Wednesday- Played Ultimate.  We had a rematch against the team which inspired my recent athletically-challenged blog.  I was encouraged this time around, however… I can tell that I have improved because a) I didn’t feel as if they’d have to resuscitate me on the field at any given moment from my out-of-shapedness and b) I didn’t feel like sitting down on the field, mid-game, crossing my arms, and sobbing!  It was a good feeling to actually have a semi-understanding of what was happening (well more so than the last game, anyway). That said, the other team would definitely fail a sportsmanship award.  They are miserable to play with as they are major gripers, and whine about every play!

Thursday- Michael has been gone this week, so that leaves me and the 2 pets home alone.  I feel guilty for being gone so long without a potty break for Zip.  My work shift currently is 7-3, but yesterday, I was supposed to stay late for a meeting.  At 2:20, I took my 30 min. lunch to rush home and let Zip out.  This eased my guilty conscience for keeping him cooped up all day.  So, I got back at 2:50, just in time for my 3:00 meeting.  No sooner did I walk in the door, than I found that the meeting was canceled due to lack of preparation, freeing me to go home at my regular time of 3.   De ja vu-edly, Zippy greeted me AGAIN, tail wagging with many barks.  At least he didn’t mind it. Grr.

Ate dinner with some friends, read 3 books to two of my favorite kids.   Oh how much I am truly a sucker for kid’s books.  Hmmmmm…I love kid’s books and games.  Maybe, it’s simply a matter of never growing up.

Friday- Tonight, I plan to go out to eat with some friends from church, then clean.

Michael has been gone this week.  He’s been speaking at camp to a group of jr hi students.  I so wish I could have gone with him, but time off is hard to come by…Although, I’ve been blessed with things to occupy my time, OH, how much I miss him!!!!  If I’m lucky, he’ll be home WAY late after he speaks tonight; if I’m not, he’ll be home tomorrow morning!  I’m hoping it will be the former, but want to make sure he’s alert enough to drive the whole way home.  Guess we’ll just have to see.

Happy weekend, all!
