Philadelphia–Late October, First of November

Michael and I took a walking tour of Philadelphia via cd one day.  I’m sure we looked like idiots as we crossed the street listening to headphones from the same cd player, looking in awe at each building, then randomly stopping to hear facts given given to us by “Philadelphia Frita.”  The cd tour was cheesy but interesting, and we were able to see many things that we would have otherwise passed by.  For instance this picture was taken outside of one of the free libraries which Benjamin Franklin helped establish (What did he NOT help establish in Philadelphia??!?).  The statue depicts Benjamin Franklin holding the scepter facing down in defiance towards the England monarch.  He’s also wearing a toga-like outfit because he was interested in establishing a new republic like Rome had done previously.  Thanks, Philadelphia Frita!  So much wonderful history that is easily passed by in the hustle and bustle of today’s society.

Another fascinating fact:  On the right is the Benjamin Franklin Post office.  The only post office in America that does not fly the American flag.  The reason for this is because the post office was established prior to the first flag being made.  Upstairs is a very small museum.  One thing I learned from it was that the US (New York City and Philadelphia) tried to create a Pneumatic tube mail system (similar to how you receive money from a drive-thru bank, or prescriptions from a drive-thru pharmacy) to deliver mail in the 1800s!  It was too cost prohibitive, however, and was dissolved.

A favorite thing of mine to do when on vacation is to check out the Foder’s book of that city and go and do what they recommend–usually the ideas are fun, and worthwhile.  The Cosmopolitan Restaurant was such a place.  While admiring the olive/martini light fixtures and the other metro-y decor, we split a yummy sandwich and salad.  What they are especially known for their shoestring fries.  After getting over the dilemma of HOW to eat them, they were delicious!

Below, is not Ben Franklin’s epitaph, but it was one that he wrote as a young man for himself, and it is on a plaque beside his grave.  Michael and I found it interesting.

Too bad that they are restoring William Penn on top of City Hall– ruined the picture .  Fun fact, thanks to the Foder’s Book…until 1987, it was the tallest building in Philadelphia.  Crazy to think about that because now, there so many taller buildings–all within 20 years!  It’s also the largest building of it’s kind in the world: masonry building (no steel).

An Amish father and son working in the field.  I wanted desperately to get a good picture, but don’t want to be one of those gawking tourists (um…too late??)…so this is through the car window…still fun, though.

Spooky Ross teaching us how to start a fire. (SURVIVOR, I’m READY!)

Self-Timer…gotta love it.  We are all laughing because I couldn’t keep anything in my pocket the entire weekend.  Before the snap, I was being teased about my clutzy ways–I hit the button and ran to get into the picture…took a slight stumble, and my phone flew out of my pocket and into the fire…luckily it was down to embers, and it landed primarily in soot.

Congrats, Sarah!

A special thanks to my WONDERFUL husband who drove 6 hours ON HIS BIRTHDAY to take me to a dear friend’s wedding!  Michael is always so giving, and this was just one more example of his sacrificial spirit.  The trip was a WHIRLWIND!  We drove up on Friday, and back on Saturday, but it was so great to be able to celebrate as my friend got hitched!  CONGRATS, Sarah!

This week will be FULL of work.  My usual days to work are Tues- Sat, but I swapped last Saturday to go to the wedding… so I will be working Mon-Sat, all 6 days in a row.  The terrific thing though, is that after Saturday… VACATION!  I can’t begin to tell you my excitement.  I’m in desperate need of a B-R-E-A-K!

HAPPY MONDAY, and Congrats again, SARAH! WHOOHOO!

the Bat’s ballgame

Went to an Louisville Bats Game with some friends…

We had a great time.  Michael and I sang for a $10,000 Oreo Jingle Contest, and received two free t-shirts for participating.  The friends we met at the park came early and got 3 bobble heads.  One of the players on the opposing team threw a ball to us.  And between all of us, we caught 2 more promotional t-shirts!  That’s 8 free things at the ball park!  Score–I never get free things like that!  Maybe we’ll win the contest, too!

That’s all, folks.  Happy Monday.  (why did I feel like the above was a math word problem?!?!?! lol.)

A walk in the woods

June 25, 2007 by Maren 11 Comments

Michael and I took a walk on Sunday afternoon at a Forest in our area.  BEAUTIFUL!  It’s so fun to stop and enjoy the peaceful creation– Michael could testify, though, that nothing quite interrupts this serenity like my intermittant hysterical screams of being chased by horseflies.  (There are some creatures in this world that we must agree to disagree about their purpose in life, and horseflies are one of these types of creatures.)  These pictures remind me of the last verse of Psalm (150:6) that says, “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.”

GRRRR… I can’t figure out how to lay out pictures on Xanga and make it look nice.  Whenever I try, it looks like a jumbled mess, so I have to go to the slideshow or spend way too much time.  Any ideas? And is there any way to preview a post before posting?  I always hit “save changes” then realize I’ve posted the thing… GRRR…

Also, on a different and random note, on Saturday, someone/something completely dug up a newly planted flower and placed it on our sidewalk (about 2 feet from where it was originally planted).  It’s baffling to me and a little unnerving.  I keep racking my brain trying to figure it all out… I don’t think a kid would be smart enough to do something like that.  If it’s a joke, it’s a dumb joke.  If it’s a window peeper, why on earth would he want us to know he’s there?? I was thinking that maybe I ran over someone’s flowers or something without knowing it, and it was retaliation.  But you’d think I would know if I had done something like that… I’m just hoping it was an animal of sorts.  It’s just too odd for me to think about…

Happy Monday!
