9 years ago today…

January 19, 2007 by Maren 14 Comments

I’ve never been one to count month anniversaries–I haven’t keep track while we were dating or married–that’s just not me.  BUT, this morning I realized that NINE years ago today, Michael and I went on our first date to a Dayton Bomber’s hockey game.  Michael and the guys in his unit had planned the group date for all of their girlfriends and me (funny…all are married to someone different).  During the game, my brother Ross, roommate Megan, and some other friends had ALSO attended and acted like paparazzi as they snapped several secret pictures of our first date MUCH TO MY MORTIFICATION, though Michael nor anyone in the group ever knew.

Rewind: When I first met Michael, I was struck by his proper speech. I think, looking back, I just wasn’t used to someone interjecting my name casually into sentences. (for example, when I asked what he did over Christmas break, his response was, “Well, Maren, I helped my father chop down wood, Maren.”) It was my first quarter, freshman year.  No one had introduced us, but we kept running into each other. EVERYWHERE…at a concert, at the Thanksgiving dinner, Open House (where he remembered my name and I had no clue who he was), Little Town of Lights, the library…we just would run into each other all the time…Admittedly, I began to know where he studied in the library and would head that direction, but most of the time they were just coincidences.  My mom asked me at Christmas if I had met anyone, and I told her “No, but I’d like to get to know this guy…”  Megan, my roommate claimed I’d marry him, but I didn’t put any stock in that notion!  I was just interested in making the most of my college experience…whether that was a relationship or not, was not something I dwelled on for too long of a time.  Nine years later, I’m still attracted to what I’ve always loved about Michael.  Of all the people I ever have known, he’s the best about being genuinely interested in people.  You know when he talks to you, he cares about you.  He’s good at carrying on a conversation, and often, I’m happy to just be in the wake of his conversation, listening & piping in with my two cents when I feel I have something to say.  I appreciate his sincerity and his guidance, helping me to realize the important things in this life…and guiding me be less concerned about petty things.  Early in our marriage, Michael wouldn’t let me argue with him about small things–he would claim that it wasn’t worth the argument, so he just wouldn’t allow it.  I appreciate that SO much about him because it has promoted much more harmony in our marriage throughout the years.  The attraction that grew into love for Michael has grown through our years of marriage.  It’s been a great 9 years!  As I look back, I’m so thankful for the way He works.  Yes, He has been good.

There’s just something about RELAXING with family!

It’s back to work today…RELUCTANTLY.  The Break was SO nice!  There’s just something to be said about relaxing for the weekend, eh?  Nothing on the agenda–NICE!  This is what we all look like as we relaxed throughout the holidays, but my dog does it best.

It’s always amazing how fast the breaks go, but, oh, how nice they are!  Griffin & Sterling left the day after Christmas to go to the Urbana Conference.  I’m glad they got to go, but missed them for the final day we were in Indy…

So, I’m back at work today, REFRESHED!  We head back up to Indy Saturday morning for Michael’s family’s Christmas.  His parents live in Ohio, and siblings live in Indiana, so we’re all rendezvousing in Indianapolis for Christmas #2.

Happy New Year!

I’d hate to break a promise…

So, a while ago, I blogged briefly about going to Cincinnati with friends.  I mentioned that when I got the pictures, I’d blog about it….I’d figured I should do as promised, so here they are!  I love getting together with friends from college (or anyone for that matter).  However, the challenge is getting an open date on everyone’s schedules that is tricky.

We basically restaurant hopped and talked…hmmm…my specialties…eating and talking.  I think those are the only areas in life that I qualify as an expert, and maybe then it should just be “foot-in-mouthing” instead of talking, ha!  We went from dinner on Friday to our hotel to breakfast to lunch to Starbucks for a snack…all we did was talk, talk, talk.

The view from our hotel.

Just chillin’.

In college, our husbands (and one other guy) had this great idea to take us on dates and make us wear these ugly shirts with goofy nicknames that they had embroidered for us.  Something happened (thankfully) and we never had to wear them.  Michael gave me mine after we were married; I think the same may be true with Jill.  Jill and I apparently both wear them as sleep shirts, and unbeknownst to the other, both brought them five years later just for the humor of it.  So, we actually carried out our men’s plan 5 years later.  What irony.  (I’m sure, too, the Ohio State coloring was not coincidental.  He was trying to indoctrinate me early on in our relationship.  Someday, I’ll have to tell you about the Ohio State pullover he gave me for MY birthday so HE could wear it. LOL)

And our last stop–enjoying Starbucks.  Like mentioned, there really wasn’t any sightseeing…just eating and talking, so the only picture opps were restaurants and the hotel.

All of us

GREAT TIMES!  Thanks, Matt & Jill!

O-H-I-O

Fun times this weekend with Family and Friends!

My parents came Friday night to help with childcare for our Bunco night for our church.  Mom brought me the “biggest birthday card I’ve ever received.” She spelled out a message in cans…  Can you see it? “H B M”  It’s hard to see, but it stands for Happy Birthday Maren.  My mom is super creative.  Michael and his dad fixed up my pantry, so my mom brought a ton of cans to fill it.  Thanks, mom!  For those of you who know me, I like to cook, but go to the grocery store ‘few and far between.’ 🙂  I have to get creative with the cooking. This will tide me over for a while. LOL

We all then got together to cheer our Buckeyes on to victory!

Here’s Michael and his siblings.

We set up a projector in our living room and in our “Buckeye” room.  Fun times.  I forgot to take pictures all throughout, so only the faithful remained at the end to capture the scene.  You get the picture…

I cut myself out of this one because I looked like my neck was permanently stuck.  I loved the pic of them, though!  Thanks for being the best!

I love this one of my parents!  If you’re wondering why they weren’t watching the tv, they were watching the projection of the game.

Our house is TINY TINY, but we still had a blast on Saturday.  It always helps when your team wins, though.  GO BUCKS!

(R&L, when you read this, we missed you!  You are in our ‘thoughts’!  Love you guys.  We’re thankful for you!)
